Claudia Cuevas

On our last journey to Antigua, Guatemala, we were told about this amazing woman with a wonderful candle store. It was our last day in the city so we had to run through the streets to find the store that only stays open until 1:00pm. And  we were glad that we did! Upon meeting the owner, Claudia Cuevas, you can see the enormous pride in her eyes as she tells you about her ancestors that started the company and the history of their wonderful craft of candle making. .

Claudia and her family wake up at 5:00am every morning to finish the beautiful free form candles they started creating in the afternoon of the previous day. Each candle is hand made, one by one and sold in her store, that is only open for four hours a day. The remainder of the day is spent by her family spinning and twirling and whirling their way through candle after candle for the next days fare. This has gone on for generations and began as far back as the 1800′s.

All the candles are pure beeswax, the wicks are pure and organic as are all of the colorings. There is never a mold or form used and the candles are sold by the pound. The candles burn for hours with no smoke whatsoever….so very lovely…like Claudia herself, who we are so happy to be able to represent…

Refined and Precious, both the jewelry and the artist…

The marvelous thing about our job ( as if there were only one thing), is having the fortune of being introduced to talents the likes of Taryn Leavitt. After having a successful career as a TV news reporter in NYC, like so very many of our RAREculture artists, Taryn knew she wanted something else. Now, she is telling her story through gold…

In speaking with Taryn about her work and her process, she acclaims “Each piece is like a puzzle with many parts coming together to make a coherent whole”…
We love the purity of these 22k gold beauties with precious stones…

Loving the vintage elegance of these modern ceramics…

We were really excited to find another ceramics duo whose creative energy
stepped beyond the norm. Sometimes it’s just plain hard to find. We love Michelle
Kosoy and Pierre Bouchard. The husband and wife team from Toronto, Canada who
work their magic in clay and glass with vintage patterns they emboss into wonderful,
soft , yet modern shapes. The other thing that sold us, was their prolific ability
to be so multi- dimensional. We not only love their home decor and table ware, but their furniture and lighting is wonderful too!

Just One of the Many Wonders of Peru…..

RAREculture has had just an amazing year of one wonderful happening after another. First we had the fortune of being sponsored to Guatemala, then to Mexico and our latest journey was to Peru…and what a wonderful journey it was!

One artist group that deserves particular mention is PaTS Peru. The man behind the mission, Gerry Cooklin, has devoted his time, energy, and resources creating a sustainable way to help the people of the Yanesha Ethnic Group of the Central Peruvian Amazon make a living and maintain the forest. A task of significant proportion, but achieved. While doing so ,Gerry has managed to design some truly extraordinary wood pieces with no electricity and carved completely by hand. We are proud to be representing PaT’S work on RAREculture and hope you will love and support it as well ….

RAREculture is honored to be working with the fabulous interior designer ”Aurelien Gallet” on the “Design On A Dime”, 2012 benefit. Organized by Housing Works since 2005,  it is one of the largest charities for the design world in New York.

More than 10 of our extraordinary artists have donated pieces of their amazing work to help the homeless and low income New Yorkers affected by HIV/AIDS. “Design On A Dime” has already raised $2M for its program “Get A Room”.

RAREculture is passionate about helping in whatever way we can with the injustice the HIV/AIDS communities face. Join us at this incredible event from April 26th through April 28th in NYC. We will have all of the artwork that the artists have donated on the RAREculture site and lots of special additions from the artists as well…

Christian Thornton….the amazing glass maestro that we are thrilled to have as a part of our RAREculture family of new artists….
At the close of 2001 Christian relocated to Oaxaca, Mexico where with design and years of labor and innovation created a project that combines the necessary
components to constitute a sustainable art glass center: formulation of waste glass, recuperation
of exhaust heat, application of alternative energies while adhering to the principles of social and
environmental responsibility.
Here are only a few of the wonderful pieces we will represent…..
